Hope Cafe at Market Place in Romford offers more than your average café experience. It’s a space where a comfortable, laid-back atmosphere intersects with a strong local mission — most of the profits go toward supporting the nearby nightshelter for homeless people. The café’s vibe is unpretentious, warm, and welcoming, with a calmness that encourages easy conversation, making it an ideal spot for those wanting a quiet catch-up or some reflective downtime.

The interior feels a bit like stepping back into simpler times, reminiscent of mid-20th century British milk bars. It’s spacious with thoughtful touches like a pool table and a real piano, adding subtle entertainment without overwhelming the peaceful environment. This sets Hope Cafe apart from the usual chain spots, attracting locals who appreciate a less hectic, more personal café experience.

Breakfast and lunch here focus on comforting, familiar dishes done well. The usual favourites include hearty English fry-ups and sandwiches, along with fresh takes on classic salads featuring chicken, avocado, or halloumi. The scrambled eggs and English muffins come recommended for those after straightforward, satisfying tastes. Prices stay reasonable, reflecting the café’s social purpose and making it accessible to a wide range of visitors.

Hope Cafe suits morning meetups or midday breaks, especially for those looking to support a local cause while enjoying well-prepared food and drink. The cappuccinos and teas complement the menu, encouraging lingering over conversation without the usual café buzz. Staff and volunteers create a friendly, inclusive feel — many visitors note the genuine kindness and dedication behind the counter, which adds to the homely environment.

This is a really special cafè. I had a delicious muffin with bacon, avocado and fried egg. Great price. Had no idea all of the proceeds go to homeless charity until I went inside. Really nice welcoming and homely atmosphere inside too. Really impressed with the volunteers especially one guy who was doing so well despite English not being his first language. Will deff go back and would encourage others to go too.

I ordered a full English which amazing, absolute quality!! And the fact that profits go to feed the homeless is even more . I would go there before anywhere else in Romford. Lovely people, God bless them

This is the place to go for a relaxed cuppa with a friend if you want to actually hear what each other says. Not noisy and hectic like other chain cafês. Very (too!) comfortable seats. Also reasonably priced snacks.

HOPE Cafe, Market Square, Romford, is a retro cafe a bit like the old fashioned National Milk Bars used to be back in the Post WW2 40's, 50's and 60's town and City cafes used to be after WW2. Today, this one is helping the homeless from its profits to run its nightshelter for the homeless nearby to help them to recover. Good idea. It gives a free meal and a drink to its nightshelter members daily except Sundays, as its closed then.

Great cafe for breakfast /lunch... Great food at an unexpected low price. Very spacious with lovely furniture. Pool table and piono (not only decorative )... Someone (who knows his music) was playing piano while we had lunch... Really nice. Very polite staff. And on top of everything is run by a charity.

Great for a coffee and good to know that the money paid goes towards charity. The cafe has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and the staff allow you to relax in the cafe even after you've finished your drink or food. The menu has a good amount of choice.
